Usually oven-baked, this flat, disc shaped bread typically topped with tomato sauce, cheese and various toppings known as pizza have undergone a lot of innovations through time. During the Medieval and Mediterranean times, pizzas first came into being as round flat bread topped with oils, herbs and cheese. Then, it came to Italy and from then on, was considered as one of the staple food of the Italian people.

Pizza slowly reached popularity after it came to America in the late 19th century which later gave birth to different pizza restaurants today such as pizza delivery, pizzerias, pizza chains and pizza restaurants serving traditional pizzas and its variants. A pizza restaurant is classified and known for according to the type of pizza it is serving. Throughout the years, pizza has been modified and changed with differing variations of names depending on how it was cooked, what toppings it has and where it originated from. It was generally believed that modern pizza originated in Italy since the Italian city of Naples is known to have the best tasting pizza anywhere. Some of the great traditional pizzas of the historic city of Naples are the Neapolitan pizza, typically made of tomatoes and cheese, and its other variations like Pizza Margherita, Pizza Marinara and Pizza Quattro Stagioni.

Today, pizzas come in all tastes and pizza toppings innovations have become a gourmet. If you love mozzarella cheese, you can go for the hand-tossed thin crust New York style pizza with its traditional toppings of mozzarella and tomatoes. Gourmets will surely love the Chicago style pizza with its buttery crust sprinkled with huge amounts of tomato sauce and cheese. A white sauce pizza on the other hand has pesto and sour cream as its sauce rather than the usual red tomato sauce and often topped with cheese and drizzled with olive oil, fresh basil and garlic. Then, there is the Greek pizza with herby base and tasty toppings and innovations, such as meat lovers, pepperoni, seafood, Thai pizzas, etc. The list is practically endless when it comes to variations of modern day pizza. These are just some of the most common pizzas we have today.

One thing is certain, though. Pizza loving people around the world will never stop enjoying pizza in all its varied concoctions and pizza restaurants will never stop discovering new innovations for the pizza loving people to enjoy.
